Americans’ usage of and frequent visits to the social media platform are on rise, a Pew Research report on social media trends in 2016 says.

With more and more Americans getting news from the social media sites, half of the people turned to the social media sites to get latest news about the 2016 election and campaigns.

Nearly eight-in-ten online Americans 1 (79%) now use Facebook, more than double the share that uses Twitter (24%), Pinterest (31%), Instagram (32%) or LinkedIn (29%). On a total population basis (accounting for Americans who do not use the internet at all), that means that 68% of all U.S. adults are Facebook users, while 28% use Instagram, 26% use Pinterest, 25% use LinkedIn and 21% use Twitter, the research service said this week.

The social media with a variety of platforms influences and pervades many dimensions of the daily lives of Americans, and the work place is no exception.

The digital platforms offers possibility to enhance worker productivity and develop relations with colleagues and connect with the global resources.

There are many reasons that the workers have turned to the social media today, some are job-related while others are more personal in nature. According to the Pew survey with the American employees (FT/PT) “there are eight different way they might use the social media:”
34% ever use social media while at work to take a mental break from their job
27% to connect with friends and family while at work
24% to make or support professional connections
20% to get information that helps them solve problems at work
17% to build or strengthen personal relationships with coworkers
17% to learn about someone they work with
12% to ask work-related questions of people outside their organization
12% to ask such questions of people inside their organization

A national survey on the social media this year finds that the Facebook is the most popular platform and that the number of older FB members is on the rise.

There is a growing concern over “privacy” and a debate is going on that whether to dismiss the “privacy” as a relic, they advocate that “privacy-is-dead camp.

While on the other side scholars and people argue that public still care for their privacy online but the profit-mongering technology companies have ill-served the sensitivities.
