British Election: Pakistan origin politicians expand voice with record 12 MPs

A sign of empowerment for the community

In the year 2015, there were 10 Pakistani origin candidates who made their way to the British House of Commons through elections.

The newspapers called it a “historic election,” for the community, which in recent years has been amplifying its political voice.

Now, in 2017 in the general elections in Britain, 12 Pakistani-origin candidates have been elected.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is already an influential presence.

Among them are five women. Seven of the politicians belong to Labor Party, while three are members of the conservative Party.

Shabana Mahmood secured 34,166 votes that makes 82.7% in Birmingham, Dr. Rosina Allin Khan secured 34,201 votes, Yasmin Qureshi has re elected in Bolton South East with 25,676 votes, Naseem Naz Shah of the labor party won Bradford West with 27,444 votes which is 64.7% of the total votes. Nusrat Munirul Ghani of the conservative party won 37,027 votes 61.2% of the total votes.
