President Donald Trump raised the issue of Russian meddling in 2016 U.S. election during his first official meeting with Russian President Vladimir Friday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in Hamburg, Germany.
“He began by raising the concern of the American people of Russian interference in the 2016 election,” Tillerson told reporters after Trump’s long meeting with his Russian counterpart during the G-40 Summit.
“He pressed him more than once,” Tillerson said of President Trump’s pressing Putin over the issue, a hot button matter subject to probe in Washington D.C.
But Putin denied Moscow’s s involvement, according to media reports.
According to Russian media reports, Put said the two leaders also talked about conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, where the two countries are on the opposite ends.
The meeting between Trump and Putin on the margins of the G-20 Summit last for 2 hours and 16 minutes.
Hamburg also witnessed protests on its streets with demonstrators objecting to U.S. trade policies.
Secretary of State Tillerson and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, attended the meeting between Trump and Putin.
