YouGov, a data analytic and research firm, has released its latest list of the most admired men and women around the world – a collection of creative, successful, famous and some controversial figures.

While the individuals ranked on the list have each some accomplishments to show, to me three of the figures stand out for their multiple traits.

Bill GatesAngelina Jolie, and Malala Yousafzai have had enormous impact  through their work.

Gates’ story of entrepreneurial success is a model of innovation for millions around the world. But he has never tried to confine himself. He is an avid reader, a generous philanthropist, and a public figure transcending borders in thoughts and work in the key fields of health and innovation.  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the wealthiest charitable organizations working in the world.

Jolie has distinguished herself as an amazing actress, and a symbol of glamor and intelligence – an achiever of the highest level. Additionally, she has been traveling the world for the cause of refugees as UN Ambassador, embracing cultures and diversity. She has traveled to troubled spots including the Muslim majority Middle Eastern countries and highlighted the plight of refugees rendered homeless and stateless by conflicts.

Malala probably makes the rarest and unique story of them all – a story of courage and determination against forces of parochialism and extremist mindset with actual on the ground struggles. The Pakistani survivor of a 2012 Taliban gun attack, the youngest Nobel Laureate has conducted herself with highly appreciable poise and appeal, winning hearts and minds of people all over the globe. Her dedication to the cause of education for girls through the Malala Fund has made her an admirable figure across cultures.

Undoubtedly, many figures who have made it to the YouGov list have also done great social service like Oprah Winfrey and Imran Khan and creative artists have entertained millions of people with their talent and skills.

Yet, Gates, Jolie and Malala represent two noble traits – devoting their  work to well-being of “others” and being inclusive in their outreach. Accepting the beauty of diverse cultures and civilizations at a time when exclusionary politics and exclusivist mindset are trying to drown out voices of tolerance and peaceful coexistence, theirs is a bold human statement toward fostering harmony and equality. Each one of them has used their unique status to advance the cause of common humanity, and huge numbers of people across the world recognize their dedication to the cause.
