U.S. President Donald Trump, while voicing concern over flare-up in India-Pakistan confrontation after Indian strikes into Pakistan has offered to mediate for resolution to the crisis between the two South Asian nuclear-armed countries.
He noted on Wednesday the close U.S. ties both countries and said he wanted India and Pakistan to stop fighting, after a night of combat which saw several dozen casualties on the Pakistani side and shooting down of several Indian warplanes.
The ongoing standoff was triggered by April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, after which New Delhi blamed a Pakistani link to the attackers.
Pakistan rejected the claim and offered to help with a neutral probe but on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday dozens of Indian fighter jets carried out strikes against what it called “terrorist infrastructure” sties in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
“It is so terrible,” Trump said of the confrontation in a Press talk.
“I get along with both. I know both very well. I want to see them work it out, I want to see them stop. Hopefully, they can stop now. They have done tit for tat.”
Trump said he would be ready to help if needed.
“We have a good relationship with both. If I can do anything to help, I will be there,” he said.
