President Donald Trump issued a travel ban Wednesday, barring nationals of 12 countries from entering the United States, citing lack of cooperating on vetting visa applicants and presence of terrorist on their soil.

The ban applies to Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, and will be effective from Monday, June 9, 2025.

Besides, nationals of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela, are going to be subject to partial travel restrictions.

“We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter the United States,” Trump said.

More countries could be added to the list, the president said.

“We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm.”

The president’s latest directive is predicated on an executive order that Trump issued on January 20,

That order directed the Departments of State, the Department Homeland Security and the Director of National Intelligence to compile a report on “hostile attitudes” toward the United States. They were tasked to determine whether entry from certain countries represented a national security risk.
