The Federal Bureau of Investigation Monday confirmed it is carrying out a probe into Russia efforts to meddle in the 2016 U.S. presidential election including whether there was any collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.
“I have been authorized by th Department of Justic to confirm the F.B.I., as part of our counterintelligence effort, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 president election,” F.B.I. director, James B. Comey told the House Intelligence Committee.
Comey along with Michael S. Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency testified before the House Committee on Russian Active Measures Investigation.
“That includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts,” Comey said in his opening statement.
Comey also said he had no information to support claims that former president Barack Obama wiretapped President Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign.
“I have no information that supports those tweets,” Comey said, when asked about claims that the former president wiretapped the current president’s phones.
The F.B. I. director said that no president could order a wiretapping operation against anyone.
