A massive snow blizzard continued to hit Washington metro area on the second day on Saturday, with normal life coming to a halt in the nation’s capital amidst more than a foot thick snow blanketing  a number of places in the District, Maryland and Virginia.

The closure of metro train service and cancellation of hundreds of air flights followed Friday evening’s shutter down of several businesses, offices, tourist attractions and schools.

Authorities had prepared people for the snowstorm, asking people to avoid driving and ensure food and other critical supplies for three days.  The storm covering the East Coast is likely to dump more than two feet of snow in Washington area by Saturday evening.

Around 33 million Americans are under blizzard warning, and several states have declared emergency. The snow continued to accumulate as midday neared on Saturday, with almost no traffic in several areas except the plowing trucks.
