With ‘great concern’ over escalating Pakistan-India tensions UN urges ‘restraint’

World body says following Kashmir tension closely; asks South Asian nations to hold talks

Voicing “great concern” over the escalating tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region, the United Nations has urged India and Pakistan to “exercise restraint” and resolve their issues through dialogue.

A spokesman of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters that the United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), which monitors the LoC, was aware of the reports of ceasefire violations and was liaising with the concerned authorities to obtain further information.

“We are following with great concern the increase in tensions along the Line of Control,” Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in reply to a question at the regular noon briefing at UN Headquarters in New York.

“The UN calls on the Governments of India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and encourage them to continue their efforts to resolve their differences peacefully and through dialogue,” the spokesman added.
