Donald Trump surged in critically important swing states including Michigan and Florida while Hillary Clinton was in winning position in Colorado, Pennsylvania and Virginia to keep the White House race as Americans waited for the outcome of the election Tuesday evening.
In many ways Trump turned predictions on their head by performing far better in Ohio, Michigan, Florida, North Carolina and New Hampshire.
Although the West Coast results will not be in for at least a few more hours, the Republican has stunned his critics who had written him off ahead of Tuesday’s vote.
Clinton, on the other hand, was losing in Michigan, a traditionally blue state.
Republicans were also winning majorities in Senate with 45-42 and in the House of Representatives 172-116 an hour from midnight.
If the presidential election trend continues, the race for 270 electoral votes would be much closer than any of the forecasts that gave Clinton a clear pathway to the magic number.
Early results were panicking the Clinton camp.
