Counterterrorism: Pakistan arrests Daesh girl, key TTP leader also in custody

The ISIS-inspired girl was part of the foiled terror bid on Easter Sunday

In a major counteterrorism development, former spokesman of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan – a defunct terror group fighting the Pakistan state – has turned himself in to Pakistani authorities and security forces have also arrested a girl inspired by ISIS (Daesh) ideology.

After Pakistan destroyed TTP strongholds in the triabl areas, Ehsanullah Ehsan joined Jamaat ul Ahrar – which has claimed some of the deadliest bombings in recent months.

“As far as Ehsanullah Ehsan is concerned, he is in our custody. When there is more information regarding him to share, we will do so,” Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, head of military’s media wing, ISPR, said.

Although, the military did not give any other specific details, experts believe the arrested TTP leader could be a big source of information on activities of TTP, which has fought Pakistan for several years, killing a large number of innocent people in terror attacks.

The girl, identified as Noreen Jabbar Laghari was arrested in Lahore, after having disappeared from the southern town of Hyderabad and joined Daesh, Pakistani military said.

During a raid on a militant hideout on Friday, Police took into custody Noreen Laghari, a student of Liaquat University of Medical Science, Jamshoro. She had gone missing since February 10, 2017 and, inspired by the ideology of Daesh or ISIS, join the group on her own.

In a video released by security organizations, Noreen Leghari denied that she had been kidnapped, saying she made the decision to travel to Lahore on her own.

The  girl revealed details about her disappearance and her potential involvement in a planned suicide attack on Easter Sunday. The ISPR , the media wing of Pakistan’s armed forces on Saturday said it had thwarted a plot to launch a major terror attack in Lahore on Easter Sunday, after an army raid in the city that killed a suspected militant.

Police overcame resistance from militants and seized suicide jackets and explosives, while one militant Ali Tariq was killed..

“She never visited Syria although she had informed through email and Facebook that she was leaving for Syria,” Director General  ISPR,

Major General Asif Ghafoor told a press conference in Rawalpindi on Monday.

In the video, Noreen Leghari had also acknowledged that her father was a professor at the Sindh University and she was a second year student of Liaquat Medical College.

It has now been revealed that the girl is Noreen Leghari shared her radical religious views on social media. Her brother told media that the family has been informed by the security forces about his sister.

Noreen Leghari is under investigation for her role in a planned Easter attack foiled by the forces and it is still unknown what was her relation with the terrorist killed in the encounter.
