Nawaz Sharif steps down after Supreme Court disqualification

Supreme Court says Sharif did not disclose his assets at the time of election

PML (N) leader Nawaz Sharif resigned as prime minister following Supreme Court’s decision on corruption charges that disqualified him as holder of the elected office for not declaring his property as required by the law.

The decision on the Panamagate case is a political setback to the ruling party and the initially the Stock Market’s reaction has been volatile.

Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf chief Imran Khan declared a victory for Pakistan after pursuing a long court case against members of the powerful ruling family.

Sharif was elected prime minister in 2013 for the third time. His earlier two terms were also cut short in a time of power struggle between Pakistani institutions during the 1990s, and he was toppled and exiled after 1999 military coup.
