U.S. Secretary of State Mikeo Pompeo Wednesday spoke with Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Qamar Bajwa and discussed relations between the two countries and the importance of fighting all terrorists in the region.
“They discussed ways to advance U.S.-Pakistani bilateral relations, the need for political reconciliation in Afghanistan, and the importance of targeting all militant and terrorist groups in South Asia without distinction,” State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a readout of the phone call.
This is Secretary Pompeo’s first contact with a senior Pakistani official since assuming the top American diplomatic position.
Pakistan is in a phase of democratic transition after the completion of the five-year term of the PML(N) government and an interim government is in place to oversee the electoral process leading to July 25 nationwide election.
