It was a crisp, shiny and a pleasant early afternoon. We were sitting in a beautiful patio of the Woman’s National Democratic Club (WNDC) with its president Nuchhi Currier.

Currier, a successful Pakistani-American financial expert, is contesting this month’s primary to secure nomination for Democratic candidate for a delegate in Maryland’s District 16.

She switches her roles between being a leader at the Woman’s Club in the heart of D.C. and a champion for all citizens of Maryland’s 16th District.

But in both roles, she has emerged as a unifier, of women and of her  community.

As I sat for her interview, she spoke passionately about the causes dear to the people of the area.

She is a writer, actor, political organizer immigrant, teacher, mother and a grandmother.

This was my second meeting with her, it was in 2016 when I briefly met with her at an Iftaar in Ramzan, organized by a think tank in Washington DC. she left a mark of her elegant personality on my mind, and I often thought about her.

While she was answering my questions, suddenly a quote from G.D. Anderson popped into my mind, “Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.”

Yes, she is a strong woman who had and still changing the way world perceives the strength of a woman. As a business leader, Currier has worked around the world, and had decades of experience in senior management at multinational companies.

“I bring people together, I make tough decisions, and I capitalize on opportunities. My career in international marketing and negotiations has given me an action-oriented vision of how to get things done,” she says in her mission statement.

But why is she running?

“In order to solve the problems we face – as a district, as a county, as a state, as a nation – we need to stand up and fight for the things we believe in,” she says on her website.

Currier is credited with turning around the Woman’s National Democratic Club from being just existing to a thriving place with a much better economic health.

“I am proud to say that today the organization generates $2 million a year and has become a hub of resistance to Trump and his dangerous agenda.”

In her six-point plan for Maryland, she want to work towards increasing business opportunities, invest in children in MD, by safeguarding the quality of District 16 schools safeguard the democracy by protecting the elections from foreign influence, fight for equality, protect the communities by combating human trafficking and gang violence without racial targeting and stand up for protection of the environment and natural resources and protect a woman’s right to quality reproductive health care.

But she has been trying to rally members of all diverse communities to one platform, using her professional expertise as a coalition builder.

“We need to bring communities together and work for the well-being of all.”
