Pakistan-India standoff could have unintended impact on Afghan peace process

Ambassador Lodhi Indian military threat would mean full attention on the eastern border

The continuing Pakistan-India standoff could force Pakistan to focus fully on its eastern border, creating implications for the Afghan peace process on its western border.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi told Fox News that in such a situation the country would naturally focus on military threat.

Although she stopped short of saying this would affect Pakistan’s role in the process, her message was clear that the shift in focus could have that unintended result.

“Our attention is going to be where we feel there is a military threat to us,” Lodhi said.

The Pakistani diplomat spoke as South Asian nuclear-armed rivals remained tense with several firing incidents along the Line of Control in Kashmir.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s Administration is working with Pakistan for a result-oriented Afghan peace process to end the longest U.S. war.
