President Donald Trump Monday renewed his offer to help India and Pakistan to address their conflict over Kashmir, saying he gets along with both countries “very well.”
“India and Pakistan are having a conflict over Kashmir as you know. I think it’s a little bit less heated right now than was two weeks ago,” Trump said during a Press interaction at the White House.
Trump was asked about his position on India-Pakistan tensions, which have escalated since August 5, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government ended autonomous status of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir territory and imposed a strict military clampdown on the area.
Trump, who first made an offer to mediate on the thorny Kashmir during a meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan during a July 22 Oval Office meeting, said he gets along with both Islamabad and New Delhi very well.
“I am willing to help them. I get along with both countries very well. I am willing to help them if they want. They know that. That (mediation offer) is out there.”
Trump also met the Indian Prime Minister Modi during a G-7 Summit in France.
Meanwhile, world leaders have expressed concern over human rights situation in the area and UN and other rights organizations have rebuked India for violating fundamental rights of the people of Kashmir, who have been living under siege for six weeks.
Kashmiri protesters have been subjected to pellet gun fires.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has condemned his Indian counterpart’s actions as “fascist” and compared his policies to those of German Nazis during the WWII.
