WHO warns of bigger risk as coronavirus claims 1,100 lives

For now, the outbreak is a spark but could become a bigger fire

As reports put death toll from coronavirus spread at more than 1,100, the World Health Organization has warned of a bigger crisis, declaring the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Now officially named 2019-nCoV, the virus causes respiratory diseases and flu like symptoms. The outbreak of coronavirus from Wuhan, China, has now spread to at least 28 other countries, according to WHO officials.

The spread of coronavirus cases outside China could be “the spark that becomes a bigger fire” and that governments must continue to treat containment of the disease as a priority, the WHO says.
“Our objective remains containment,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference in Geneva on Monday.
“We call on all countries to use the window of opportunity we have to prevent a bigger fire.”

Most cases of the disease outside China have been people who had just spent time there or others who came into contact with them.
But in some countries the virus has continued to spread, leading to local outbreaks, which is what most worries, WHO says.
“The detection of this small number of cases could be the spark that becomes a bigger fire, but for now it’s only a spark,” Tedros  aid at the press conference.

The outbreak has affected international travel and halted economic activity in parts of China hit hardest by the disease.

Beijing now hopes that around 160 million employees would return to work next week after a lockdown in Wuhan and precautionary measures elsewhere, particularly in Hubei province.

As part of measures to stop the spread of the deadly virus, China plans to limit the carrying capacity of long-distance coaches, sterilize public transport, and take temperature readings of travelers, Xu Yahua, Director of Transport Services Department, revealed.
