Imran Khan sets up Coronavirus Relief Fund as Pakistan struggles to contain outbreak

Says deposits will be tax deductible

Prime Minister Imran Khan Tuesday said his Government has set up a Coronavirus Relief Fund where people can deposit their contributions to help the country’s fight against coronavirus, which has infected more than 1700 people and killed 24 patients.

The pandemic poses a huge challenge to Pakistan’s economy, which is already reeling under balance of payment pressures, and tepid growth. Islamabad is also seeking assistance from the IMF, World Bank and ADB to finance its more than $5 billion relief package.

“Today I am announcing the Prime Minister’s Coronavirus Relief Fund,” Khan said in a televised address to the nation.

Khan added that deposits in the account would be tax deductible.

During his address, the Khan also argued against imposing a complete lockdown on the country.

Here are details of the Fund as released by the PM’s Office in Islamabad.
