Democratic Ralph Northam on Tuesday defeated Republican Ed Gillespie in a morale-boosting victory for Democrats, as voters backed Northam’s policies and agenda for development of the state.

The race between the two candidates gained national attention as it was seen a vote on President Donald Trump’s policies and performance.

Gillespie had adopted a tough approach to immigration on the campaign trail.

Northam was popular among Virginia’s diverse communities and immigrants.

The victory of Northam, who served as Lieutenant Governor with outgoing governor Terry McAuliffe, will strengthen Democrats’ base in Virginia.

“Tonight we proved that we’re stronger when we value and fight for one another. Onward to Richmond!” a Facebook post on Northm’s Page said.
