Maryland’s leaders from both parties applauded Montgomery County Muslim Foundation for its continued work in service of humanity as they joined more than 500 community representatives in celebrations marking the annual Iftar dinner.
Headed by Pakistani-American Tufail Ahmad, the MCMF has won state and county recognition for its commitment and efficient work that aids the hungry, homeless, refugees and disadvantaged members of all communities.
Besides, the Foundation provides a platform for discussion on fostering interfaith harmony and understanding.
Maryland’s Republican Governor Larry Hogan issued a citation appreciating the work of MCMF and conveying Ramadan Greetings while Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and Department of Human Rights partnered with MCMF to host May 29 event. County Executive and County President had also issued a proclamation, declaring May 5, 2019 to June 4, 2029 Muslim American Ramadan (Fasting) Month.
In addition, U.S. Senator Chris van Hollen, Congressman John Sarbanes and Congressman Jamie Raskin sent their representatives to the event. State Senators Susan Lee and State Legislature Lily Qi and Emily Shetty also attended the event. Maryland Governor’s Office was represented by Kevin Craft and Christina Wong Poy.
In his remarks, County Executive Elrich appreciated the great work that the MCMF has rendered under the leadership of Tufail Ahmad, a known leader across communities. He spoke about the county’s diverse communities and their contributions to the well-being of the residents and the county.
The gathering became a festive occasion for social comingling as it featured a large number of Montgomery County residents of diverse faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds including leaders from Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu faiths. The MCMF treated the attendees to some popular Pakistani cuisines to mark the Iftar.
Montgomery County Council members Will Jawando, Evan Glass and Andrew Friedson. James Stowe, Director Department of Human Rights & Human Rights Commission members also attended the Event.
Another highlight of the event was MCMF’s Community service award ceremony. County Executive gave certificates of appreciation to volunteers.The recipients included Montgomery County residents, Omar Asghar, Salma Faridi, Mary Hull, school counselor of Richard Montgomery and Ambassadors from American Senior Services for their exemplary service to MCMF programs and commitment to help the needy.
