School named after Malala Yousafzai opens in Texas

Pakistani Nobel Laureate continues to be a powerful inspiration for children

An elementary school in Fort Bend county Texas named after Malala Yousafzai opened this week, celebrating the Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner’s unflinching commitment to education for all children.

“This is an important part of the mission statement for our new school named in honor of @Malala. We believe our elementary school students can change the world now!” a Twitter post by Malala Yousafzai Elementary School said as parents, teachers and students looked forward to a quality education for children at the new school.

Malala was just 15 when she was shot by the Taliban for dauntlessly standing up for girls’ right to an education in Pakistan’s Swat valley. The survivor of the militant attack gained worldwide fame and support for her mission, which she continues through UK-based Malala Fund.

She has addressed the United Nations and also spoken at several American institutions.

Malala is a powerful inspiration for millions of children around the world. The MYE school library has books about Malala and Malala’s autobiography “I am Malala” is also part of the collection.

The name of the school was selected through a process on submission of names and the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees voted to name the District’s 51st elementary school Malala Yousafzai Elementary School on December 17, 2018.

The school desires to host Malala to honor her and inspire the children.

A large image of Malala is displayed on a wall of the school with her famous call for education “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.”
