Trump Administration plans to send checks to Americans to mitigate coronavirus impact

Treasury Secretary Munchin says White House to preview proposal Tuesday

Stepping up U.S. response to coronavirus outbreak, the White House said Tuesday the Administration wants to send checks to Americans in the next couple of weeks to mitigate its economic impact.

Treasury Secretary Steven Munchin revealed, speaking in the presence of President Donald Trump at the White House, said the Administration will preview the idea.

“You can think of this like business interruption payments to the American worker,” Mnuchin told journalists amid sweeping closures of restaurants, bars and other small businesses amid a massive slump in economic activity as people stay away from workplaces.

The treasury secretary noted that administration indicated that it would not like to include those making million dollars a year.

“I think it’s clear we don’t need to send people who make a million dollars a year checks, but that’s one of the ideas we like,” Munchin said.

“We’re going to preview that today and we’ll be talking about details afterwards.”
