Trump greets Muslims as they mark Eid in a world changed by COVID-19

Secretary of State Pompeo also wishes Muslims a happy Eid

President Trump has greeted Muslims on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr, saying people have relied on their faith, family and friends in fighting the coronavirus outbreak.

Like other aspects of life, the COVID-19 crisis sweeping the world has subdued Eid gatherings and festivities as people observe social distancing and self-isolation to curb the virus spread.

In his message President Trump said, “On Eid al-Fitr, the First Lady and I send our warmest greetings to Muslims in the United States and around the world as they celebrate.”

He noted the significance of the religious occasion for the Muslims.

“Known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan—a month filled with fasting, prayer, reflection, and other traditional observances.  Over the past weeks and months, as we have fought the coronavirus, we have relied on our faith, family, and friends to help guide us through these unprecedented times.  As Muslims observe the day of Eid al-Fitr, we hope they find both comfort and strength in the healing powers of prayer and devotion.

“Now more than ever we are reminded of the reassuring peace, uplifting love, and heartening fellowship that religion brings into our lives.  We send our best wishes for a blessed and joyous Eid al-Fitr.”

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also wished Muslims a joyous Eid, while also noting the changes the coronavirus pandemic has brought to the world.

“Susan and I extend our warmest wishes to Muslims around the world who are celebrating Eid al-Fitr. Over the past month, Muslims at home and abroad have fasted, centered around spiritual reflection, community and values of gratitude, compassion, and generosity, and have adapted to practicing their faith and observing Ramadan in a world changed by a global pandemic.”

In his message Pompeo appreciated the work Islamic humanitarian organization are doing in saving lives.

“Ramadan and Eid serve as reminders of the importance of community, acts of service, and protection of fundamental freedoms such as religion or belief, especially in this time of crisis.  During this global pandemic, Muslim communities such as Uighurs, Rohingya, and others who face harsh challenges to practice their faith have faced even greater threats, including scapegoating, harassment, and confinement.  We are especially grateful for the many private Islamic relief organizations, in America and around the world, whose heroic work has saved lives.  We join the Muslim community in standing in solidarity with the oppressed, no matter their faith or interpretation, and call on all governments to protect religious freedom for all.

To all Muslims around the world, we wish you Eid Mubarak.”
