Aziz entertained generations of Pakistanis with his versatile talents

Those of us who grew up in the golden era of Pakistan Television can vividly recall how important a role Tariq Aziz played in popularizing the channel with his trademark “Neelam Ghar – a quiz and entertainment program.

But Aziz was not just an anchor or compere. He was an actor and a trend-setter, a lover of Urdu and Punjabi languages and literature, a well-read figure, who lived and enlivened his times in 1970s and 1980s.

All these qualities made him an indispensable PTV face, and a part of the evolving culture in the two decades.

His story is also inspiring because he had worked hard in his early years to survive in Lahore, once he decided to try his talent in the world of national media.

The most important thing is that he rose to the highest levels through his education, knowledge, and versatile talents.

The legendary TV host passed away last night in Lahore, at age of 84.

Aziz was born in Jalandhar on April 28, 1936.  After Pakistan’s inception, his family migrated to Pakistan and settled in Sahiwal. He got his early education there.

Aziz also waded into politics, bringing his characteristic voice to the National Assembly from 1997-99.

During the four decades in limelight, Aziz became the face of Pakistani culture, the art of entertainment, and TV shows. His participation in so many facets of life made him a lively voice and a cultural icon of Pakistan.

Shakespeare said this world is a stage and we are all actors, who come and perform our roles.

Tariq Aziz performed this role admirably, setting new standards, introducing new styles, and became an attraction for “watching eyes and attentive ears.”

From the screen of the TV channel, he bubbled out with his enthusiasm and love for his profession and appealed to countless millions.

What a lively voice, and a great role as an enthralling figure! May God bless you forever for the joy you brought to millions of Pakistanis through those years and decades.
