President-elect is all set to advance his legislative agenda with the Democratic control of the U.S. Senate after securing victories in two Georgia runoff contests.
Democratic Raphael Warnock’s victory of Republican Kelly Loeffler and Jon Ossoff’s win against Republican David Perdue on Wednesday equalized the two parties’ representation in the chamber with 50-50 seats.
The Senate Democrats will have their way in the chamber with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ casting vote that would make the Democratic support 51 against Republicans’ 50.
Democrats have already retained their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Warnock, a pastor, is the first African-American to represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate.
Biden had won the presidential vote in Georgia, long a conservative bastion.
Now the Senate results in favor of Democratic candidates indicate the Southern state has become Democrat-leaning.
President Donald Trump and Biden had addressed voters in the state as both parties had high stakes in the outcome of the runoffs.
