Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient and a staunch advocate for girls’ right to education, is a married woman now, calling the occasion a precious moment of her life.

The 24-year-old global icon, who survived a 2012 Taliban attack and later evolved into a leading figure promoting girls’ access to education, said in a Twitter post that she tied the wedding knot with Asser Malik, a cricket manager.

Malalas is based in the United Kingdom, where she earned a graduate degree.

Malala, who in an interview last summer had cast doubt about the institution of marriage, said the wedding day marked a “precious day in my life.”

“Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead.”

Soon the Twitter images and the news of her wedding hit social media platforms and media websites with images of the ceremony splashing.

Malala received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, as she emerged as a symbol of girl’s rights and a strong voice against extremism.

In the US, a school has been named after Malala as a tribute to her commitment to education for all. The Oxford-educated rights advocate has also written a book “My name is Malala” She also served as a UN Messenger of Peace and has been honored with numerous awards.

Her father Ziauddin Yousafzai has been a source of support for Malala, and is widely respected for encouraging her daughter through challenging times.
